Richard Wagner's opera "The Flying Dutchman" in three acts

First performance: Dresden, January 2, 1843.

The ancient legend about a phantom ship that is forced to wander the seas and oceans with the opportunity to land on shore once every seven years, over time acquired romantic features: only true female love can save the "Flying Dutchman".

Having become acquainted with the plot of the legend, the composer was shocked: "This plot delighted me and was indelibly imprinted on my soul." However, Wagner turned to him later: after a long sea voyage to Great Britain, accompanied by terrible storms and gales.

The opera "The Flying Dutchman", created in record time, unites the world of fantasy, mysticism, folk scenes and the high ideals of romanticism.

The image of a powerful element, full of strength and mysterious beauty, became not only an incentive for the creation of the opera score, but also an important emotional background for the events that took place, harmoniously intertwined by Wagner in one of his best creations.
