Marine Festival at the Hermitage Theatre

Holding the festival at the Hermitage Theatre in midsummer with the participation of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler has become a wonderful tradition of the Northern capital.

This year, the theme of the festival project is the sea element. The idea was inspired by the glorious history of St. Petersburg, one of the most famous sea cities in the world, where everything connected with the sea is valued.

The program "Sea at Night" will feature a masterpiece of world musical culture - the opera "The Flying Dutchman" by Richard Wagner.

The ancient legend about a phantom ship that is forced to wander the seas and oceans with the opportunity to land on shore once every seven years, over time acquired romantic features: only true female love can save the "Flying Dutchman".

Having become acquainted with the plot of the legend, the composer was shocked: "This story delighted me and was indelibly imprinted in my soul." However, Wagner turned to it later: after a long sea voyage to Great Britain, accompanied by terrible storms and gales.

The opera "The Flying Dutchman", created in record time, unites the world of fantasy, mysticism, folk scenes and the high ideals of romanticism.

The image of a mighty element, full of strength and mysterious beauty, became not only an incentive for the creation of the opera score, but also an important emotional background for the events that took place, harmoniously intertwined by Wagner in one of his best creations.
