Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini
Comic opera in one act
Soloists and orchestra of the Galina Vishnevskaya Center for Opera Singing
Conductor Marco Boemi
Libretto by Giacomo Forzano
based on the XXX song “Ada” from “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri
“Gianni Schicchi” is the last of Puccini’s triptych of three one-act operas, which brought him success; the other two are “The Cloak” and the very rarely performed “Sister Angelica.” The opera is based on an incident that occurred in Florence in 1299. Gianni Schicchi is a historical character, a contemporary of Dante. He was a provincial - a rogue and a deceiver who moved to Florence and became rich there.
This is the only comic opera owned by the composer. It traces the traditions coming from Verdi's Falstaff, with which this work brilliantly completes the rich history of the genre of Italian opera buffa.
The premiere took place on the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera Theater in December 1918 on the same evening as the other two parts of the cycle. Now the opera is included in the repertoire of the largest opera houses in the world.
The production at the Opera Singing Center was carried out by the young director Mikhail Sabelev, a student of Rimas Tuminas and Ivan Popovski, laureate of the IV International Competition of Young Opera Directors “Nano-Opera”. The conductor-producer is the famous Italian maestro Marco Boemi, who has previously collaborated with the Center on several occasions. Scenography and costumes - Irina Sid, who, as a production designer, has designed more than 20 musical and dramatic performances in theaters in the capital and regions. The opera premiered on December 9, 2022.
