Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Opera "The Marriage of Figaro"
In November-December 2022, the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of People's Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler will present performances of three operatic masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and That's what everyone does, written to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte .
The opera The Marriage of Figaro, the first of this trilogy, was created based on the comedy of the French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais Crazy Day, or The Marriage of Figaro. The librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte not only smoothed over the "sharp corners" of the play banned in Austria, but also obtained permission to stage the opera.
The premiere of The Marriage of Figaro took place in Vienna in 1786 and aroused the interest of the public, which repeatedly applauded individual numbers of the opera performance. The first two times the opera was conducted by the author himself, simultaneously performing the part of the clavier. However, after several shows, the new production was removed from the repertoire of the Burgtheater and returned to its stage only two years later.
The opera received triumphal recognition a few months after its premiere in Prague. Mozart, having visited the capital of the Czech Republic, shared his impressions in one of his letters: “Here they don’t talk about anything other than Figaro, they don’t play anything, they don’t praise, they don’t whistle and sing, except for Figaro, no they don't listen to other operas - only Le Figaro".
Organically combining the traditions of German musical theater and Italian art of bel canto (“beautiful singing”), Mozart became a true reformer of opera. The composer paid great attention to the development of stage action, but, nevertheless, he gave preference to music, thanks to which the characters of the opera performance acquired an individual and recognizable sound characteristic.
The comic opera The Marriage of Figaro, filled with funny situations and misunderstandings, masterfully twisted intrigue, successfully resolved at the end with the triumph of love, is a brilliant example of Mozart's opera theater, in whose heroes the audience recognizes themselves.
The work of the genius composer, who created the highest examples of art, continues to inspire professionals and amateurs of different generations around the world in the 21st century.
