О нем говорили: «Злой человек джаза», «желтый негр». His works were called "living organisms", "noise attacks" and "bouts of musical madness." His music is filled with the fierce sadness of a man who was often on the verge of life and death.
All of this is the great jazz double bass player and composer Charles Mingus.
December 2, for the first time on the stage of the Imperial Hermitage Theater - the program of the St. Petersburg jazz septet "Dedication to Charles Mingus".
This evening, the musicians, following the jazz spirit of the great Charles Mingus, will present the listeners with a fantastic example of collective improvisation and virtuoso performance skills.
The concert is held in accordance with the directive of the Government of St. Petersburg and will definitely take place.
Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was a great American jazz double bass player and composer. His compositions relied heavily on gospel music with elements of free jazz and classical music. But Mingus himself did not consider himself to be in any of the directions. At different times, dozens of musicians worked in Mingus's group, who later achieved fame and success. On stage, Mingus preferred collective improvisation, focusing on what each member does for the group as a whole.
The St. Petersburg jazz septet A TRIBUTE TO CHARLES MINGUS was created at the end of 2012 in St. Petersburg by the famous St. Petersburg double bass player Grigory Voskoboinik. All the musicians of the collective are known both in Russia and in Europe. The members of the septet are mainly session musicians working in a wide variety of styles, but in this project the artists follow the jazz spirit of the great Charlie Mingus, supporting each other and competing with each other. The author's arrangements of the works belong to the participants of the first composition of the septet Sergey Bogdanov and Anton Boyarskikh.
The program "Dedication to Charles Mingus" has been repeatedly presented on the best stages of St. Petersburg: in the Big and Small Halls of the St. Dmitry Shostakovich, in the Museum of Contemporary Art "Erarta", on the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, the Philharmonic Society of Jazz Music, as well as at festivals: Manor Jazz, Jazz in the Hermitage Garden, Brodsky Drive and others.
And in 2014, the project took part in the cultural program of the Paralympic Games in Sochi.
In 2013, with the personal permission of Mingus' widow, the band released an album on NewFolder (2) Records.
