Performance by YURIE ALEXANDROV to music by P. Tchaikovsky

The play by Yuri Alexandrov turned into an unconventional directorial decision, which made it possible to take a fresh look at the familiar events of the most popular Russian opera. In a new interpretation, the action takes place in the atmosphere of the Chekhov era of the late 19th century.

The stage director Y. Aleksandrov himself formulated the concept of the performance as follows: "We are not showing Tchaikovsky's opera, but our attitude towards Tchaikovsky and Pushkin." In his "Onegin" semantic and temporal accents are shifted, which allows the audience to look at the operatic characters from a new perspective. The entire context of the work is built in the style of Chekhov's rather than Pushkin's theater.

And even if “Eugene Onegin” under the direction of Aleksandrov is a unique opera, the action, filled with many interesting directorial finds, is not at all captivating. Gradually, picture by picture, the original idea of the director becomes clear. So the audience understands that everything that happens is a figment of the imagination of the dreamy Tatiana, in whose creative consciousness the past, present and future are bizarrely connected.

The textbook story of unhappy love in this interpretation takes on its original freshness.

The first performance of the opera took place on March 17, 1879 in Moscow by the students of the conservatory under the direction of N. Rubinstein.

Premiere at the St. Petersburg Opera Theater - June 29, 1993 at the Hermitage Theater.
