A village in the mountains, surrounded by forests and vineyards. In the foreground is the house of the peasant woman Bertha, the widow who lives here with her daughter Giselle. Peasants are sent to harvest grapes.
On the side opposite to where the grape harvesters left, two come out: one is dressed in a rich dress, the other, apparently, is his servant. This is Prince Albert with the squire. Both hurriedly hiding in a hunting lodge, from where, after a while, Albert goes dressed in a peasant dress. This scene is observed by forest ranger Hans, not noticed by Albert and the squire.
Albert approaches Bertha's house. The squire tries to dissuade him from some intention, but Albert removes the squire, knocks on the door and hides around the corner of the house. Gisselle comes out to knock. Strange - no one! She takes a carefree frolic, dances. Appears Albert. Giselle pretends not to notice him and goes to the house.
Then Albert touches her shoulder and gently draws her. Their dance turns into a love scene. Half-jokingly, Giselle expresses a lack of confidence in Albert's love confessions. She tears the flower and guesses on its petals: "Likes - does not like". It turns out - "does not like". Giselle is saddened. Albert tears out another flower. He gets "loves." Giselle calms down and again dances with Albert. Keen on the dance, they do not notice how close to them is Hans. He conjures Gisselle not to believe Albert's words. He anticipates that Giselle does not expect happiness, but sorrow; passionately assures Gisselle that she can not find a more devoted friend than he. Enraged, Albert drives Hans away. Giselle believes that the simpleton Hans humbled God knows that in a fit of jealousy, and with even greater tenderness continues the dance with Albert.
From the vineyards, Giselle's friends return. They surround her and start dancing. Albert watches Giselle with admiration. Embarrassed and proud of his attention, she also invites him to take part in the general merriment.
Gisselle's mother left the house to stop dancing and reminds her daughter that it is harmful for her to dance so much: she has a sick heart. But Gisselle does not fear anything, she is happy. At Bertha's insistence, everyone diverge.
From afar, the sounds of hunting horns are heard, and soon there are nobles led by Herzog and his daughter - Batilda, Albert's bride. Hot and tired with the hunt, they want to rest and refresh themselves. Berta bustles around the table, bowing deeply to noble gentlemen. Gisselle comes out of the house. Batilda admires the beauty and charm of Giselle. The same does not take eyes from Batilda, studying every detail of her toilet. Especially striking is the simple plume of the duke's daughter. Between Batilda and Giselle there is a dialogue: "What are you doing?" - Asked Batilda .- "I am in the hands of the hamlet, I help with the housework," the girl replies. "But there is probably something else that you are more willing to do?" the noble lady asked. "Oh yes," answers Gisselle, "I like to dance most of all in the world." And she does some na.
Having penetrated even more sympathy for Giselle, Batilda gives her a golden chain. Giselle is pleased and embarrassed by the gift. Batilda's father goes to Bertha's house to rest. Hunters also go on vacation.
Giselle's friends ask Bert to let them dance a little more. She reluctantly agrees. The delighted Giselle dances her best dance. Albert joins her. Suddenly Hans runs up, rasstalkivaet them roughly and, pointing to Albert, reproaches him for dishonesty. Everyone is indignant at the arrogance of the forester. Then, in support of his words, Hans shows Albert's gems strewn with precious stones, discovered by him in a hunting lodge, where Albert changed clothes. Giselle is shocked and demands from Albert an explanation. He tries to calm her, pulls out a sword from Hans, reveals it and rushes to the offender. The armor-bearer stops his master to prevent the murder. Hans blasts into the hunting horn. Out of the house, the participants of the hunt, alarmed by an unexpected signal, led by the Duke and Batilda. Seeing Albert in a peasant dress, they express extreme surprise; he is embarrassed and tries to explain something.
The duke's retinue bowed respectfully to Albert, and the distinguished guests greeted him so cordially that the unhappy girl had no doubts: she was deceived. When Albert comes to Batilde and kisses his hand, Gisselle runs up to her and says that Albert swore to her in fidelity that he loves her. Outraged by Giselle's pretensions, Batilda shows her her wedding ring-she's Albert's bride. Giselle tears off the gold chain donated by Batilda, throws it to the ground, and, sobbing, falls on the mother's hands. Not only friends and fellow villagers Giselle, but even the court dukes are full of sympathy for the unhappy girl.
Albert says something to Giselle, but she does not want to listen to him. She's going crazy. In the puzzled consciousness flashed scattered pictures of the recent past, fortune telling, vow, words of love, dances. Noticing the Albert's sword lying on the ground, Gisselle grabs her to take her own life. Hans takes the weapon from Giselle's hands.
The last time it seems, the returned consciousness carries it to the mother, and then to the beloved, but the heart does not stand and in the arms of Albert Giselle falls dead.
...Night. Rural cemetery. Here comes the inconsolable Hans. Mysterious sounds are heard, marsh lights flash. The frightened Hans flees. Moonlight falls on a shadow growing from the ground. This is the lady of the Myrtle Jeep.
Because of the bushes appears round dance jeep. They go to the lake and bathe in the moonlight. By the sign of Mirta, they surround Giselle's grave, preparing to meet with a new friend. From the grave rose the ghostly figure of Giselle. The mantle of Myrth's hand, and Giselle gains strength. Her movements are becoming faster and more confident.

From the darkness comes Albert, pursued by the Villis. He falls at the feet of Myrtle, praying for salvation. But Mirta is ruthless. Stretching his hands to his beloved, Gisselle runs in. She leads Albert to the tombstone and protects him. Myrtle, wishing to destroy Albert, orders Gisselle to leave him and dance. Despite the prohibition of Mirta, Albert joins Giselle. This is their last dance.
